Business Development Manager (BDM)
This position requires a proven hunter with an established network in the logistics, warehousing, or supply chain sector, a track record of
closing significant deals, and the ability to operate independently with minimal supervision. The Business Development Manager (BDM) is a senior commercial role responsible for driving revenue growth through new business acquisition and strategic account
development in the Durban region. Experience in warehousing, intermodal,container depot, clearing & forwarding, orcontract logistics is highly advantageous
Duties & Responsibilities
1. New business acquisition: identifying, qualifying, and closing new clients in warehousing,
container depot, clearing & forwarding, and integrated logistics services
2. Account development: growing revenue and margin within existing accounts through
upsell, cross-sell, and service expansion
3. Pipeline management: maintaining a healthy commercial pipeline with conversion rates
that consistently exceed targets
4. Deal structuring and negotiation: leveraging commercial acumen to structure profitable
deals that protect margin while remaining competitive
5. Strategic relationship building cultivating senior-level relationships with decision-makers in
target industries and leveraging existing networks to accelerate business development
6. Market intelligence: tracking competitor activity, market trends, and customer needs to
inform commercial strategy
Desired Experience & Qualification
- 7 to 10 years of proven business development, sales, or key account management experience
- in the logistics, warehousing, freight, or supplychain sector
- Demonstrated track record of closing new business deals, verifiable revenue targets met or exceeded consistently over multiple years
- Existing network of client relationships in theDurban/KZN region or nationally, ability toleverage these relationships to acceleratebusiness development.
- Tertiary qualification in Business, Commerce,Supply Chain Management, Logistics, or a
- related field is preferred but not required if compensated by exceptional experience andresults
- Experience in warehousing, intermodal,container depot, clearing & forwarding, orcontract logistics is highly advantageous
Essential Skills:
• Proven deal-making ability, track record of consistently closing significant new business deals
• Established network, existing relationships with decision-makers in logistics, manufacturing, retail, FMCG, mining or related industries
• Commercial negotiation, ability to structure deals, negotiate terms, and close business at senior levels
• Strategic selling, able to navigate complex B2B sales cycles involving multiple stakeholders
• MS Office proficiency (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
• CRM platform experience, comfortable logging activity, tracking pipeline, and reporting on sales performance
• Self-starter mentality, operates independently, manages own time, and drives results without constant direction
Essential Knowledge:
• Deep understanding of logistics and supply chain operations, warehousing, freight, clearing &
forwarding, container depot services
• Commercial acumen, understands margin, cost structures, pricing dynamics, and competitive
positioning
• Market awareness, knows the competitive landscape in the KZN/Durban logistics market and
can identify gaps and opportunities
• Customer-centric mindset, able to identify customer pain points and structure solutions that
address them profitably
• Industry credibility, the ability and experience to engage with C-suite executives and senior
operations leaders as a peer
